About this position
We are seeking a dynamic professional with proven expertise in coordinating projects and initiatives contributing to the sustainable development of the Amazon region, and with hands-on experience working within or alongside multilateral development banks.
In this role, you will contribute to the IDB Group’s Amazonia Forever Program by accelerating implementation, strengthening project impact, sharing evidence-based innovations, and leveraging expertise to support sectoral and policy development and enhance coordination. As Amazonia Sector Specialist, you will report to the Lead Sector Specialist within the Amazonia Coordination Unit (ACU), working in close coordination with other sectors and country teams within the IDB Group.
The Amazonia Coordination Unit (ACU) is small and dynamic team, with some division of responsibilities but also an expectation for strong teamwork, proactivity, flexibility, and collaborative spirit. The team works under the Vice-presidency of Countries and Regional Integration (VPC) at IDB, as well as with specialists and management throughout the IDB Group and the country offices in the Amazon region.
What you’ll do
Working in coordination with the Lead Sector Specialist of the Amazonia Coordination Unit, you will:
- Advance the sectoral implementation of the Amazonia Forever Program in line with its thematic pillars, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and measurable outcomes.
- Collaborate and contribute to the preparation of evidence-driven insights and sectoral analyses to inform pipeline development and portfolio management, ensuring strategic alignment with institutional objectives and country-specific and regional priorities. This includes the monitoring of projects results on a sectoral basis, analyzing progress, and making recommendations.
- Proactively and strategically coordinate collaboration across different areas of the IDB Group and in close coordination with the IDB, IDB Invest, and IDB Lab.
- Provide daily coordination sectoral work in Amazonia, ensuring seamless articulation, and support the achievement of project objectives of Amazonia Forever’s portfolio within the established timeline.
- Contribute to and support sectoral dialogue with key stakeholders, national and local government authorities, other partners, and non-governmental organizations in order to identify potential areas of Bank support that contribute to achieving the Amazon region’s development objectives, as well as to expand the dialogue of the IDB Group and the Amazon Coordination Unit with key actors involved in the region’s sustainable development.
- Support identification and development of strategic knowledge products related to Amazonia Forever’s portfolio and based on sector work, dialogue with partners and allies, with client countries, among others.
- Support the early identification of opportunities for continuous growth of Amazonia Forever’s strategic pipeline for the region, ensuring that projects are technically sound and reflect an integrated vision of the IDB Group.
- Participate in the formulation and implementation of operations and technical cooperations in the Amazon region, anticipating sector-specific related risks and opportunities to ensure that results are achieved and that operations are effectively executed throughout their entire duration.
- Support the development of strategic reports and documents to support meetings with ACU leadership.
- Support the design and implementation of strategic meetings, conferences, and forums, ensuring that key stakeholders from multiple sectors are engaged in meaningful dialogue to promote regional integration.
What you'll need
- Education: Master’s degree in environmental and/or natural resource management/ economics, business administration, project management, or other fields relevant to the responsibilities of the role.
- Experience: At least three years (five preferably) of progressive experience in a related field, in a multinational environment. Demonstrated experience working in Amazonian territories is required. Through prior experience, you have acquired a working understanding of multilateral development banks (MDBs), including project management for sustainable development. You have experience working at multiple levels and covering key development areas in the Amazon region (e.g. social, environmental, infrastructure, sustainable production, security, others).
- Languages: Proficiency in Spanish and English, written and spoken, is required. Additional knowledge of Portuguese is preferable.
Requirements
• Citizenship: You are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries.
• Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.
Type of contract and duration
International staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
