About this position

We are looking for an Emerging Technology Engineer Consultant. As an Emerging Technology Engineer Consultant, you will work closely with Technology Advisors, clients, and vendors to map, design, and develop digital interventions using new technologies and solutions to add value quickly while advancing the IDB’s mission.

You will work in the Laboratory of Emerging Technologies as part of the Technology and Transformation Department. This team is responsible for supporting the IDB Group by becoming a go-to source to understand and apply emerging technologies to its operations. It accelerates the adoption of these tech advances in areas that can positively impact the development of Latin America and the Caribbean.

What you’ll do

  • Analyze the business problem to be solved, gather requirements by asking the appropriate questions to understand current and desired situations in which a software application can help.
  • Explore and analyze APIs and software components to determine their potential to be used on real application solutions.
  • Research, learn, and apply new technologies with potential impact in IDB Operations and corporate solutions.
  • Provide support to develop Proof of Concepts (POCs) and rapid prototyping, evaluating feasibility of technology, risks and opportunities.
  • Assist with writing articles, reports, and technical notes on emerging technologies and their applications in business areas of the IDB.
  • Presenting findings to non-technical audiences.
  • Support Technology and Transformation advisors providing research/expertise in new technologies.
  • Coordinate technical efforts with vendors validating proposals, architectures, and deliverables.  

What you'll need

  • Education: Master’s degree (or equivalent advanced degree) in Computer Science, Data Science, Software engineering or other fields relevant to the responsibilities of the role.
  • Experience: At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in software development and/or machine learning.
  • Languages: Proficiency in Spanish and English, spoken and written, is required. Additional knowledge of French and Portuguese is preferable.

Additional Experience:

  • SDLC, system architecture, and Agile/Scrum methodology
  • Rapid prototyping, technical feasibility, security, and scalability assessment
  • Open-source ecosystem: tools, repositories, and licensing models
  • Programming: Python, C# (data and backend development)
  • AI/ML solutions: LLMs, model evaluation, prompt engineering, and orchestration (IoT deployment a plus)
  • Data engineering: data pipelines, preprocessing, and data quality management
  • Databases: SQL and NoSQL systems
  • Cloud platforms: AWS and Azure, API-based and cloud-native solution development
  • Data visualization: Tableau, Power BI (and similar tools)
  • Emerging tech & communication: GIS (ArcGIS), Blockchain, Quantum tech (plus), and technical writing (notes, papers, articles)

Requirements

  • Citizenship: ou are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries.  Must be eligible to work in job location(s) without the need for sponsorship. 
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.

Type of contract and duration

Local Remote Consultant Full-Time, 12 months (up to 48 months, subject to eligibility) rendered 100% remotely from place of residence of the selected candidate. Services are expected to be provided from a country where the IDB Group has offices.
