This will allow IDB Invest to significantly scale up its investments, nearly doubling annual financing from approximately $8 billion to $19 billion, and unlocking greater private sector participation to drive development and climate impact across the region.

To deliver on this ambition, IDB Invest reorganized its structure and created the Regions Department, which manages business and client relationships from a country perspective. The regions include:

  • Southern Cone (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay)
  • Andean Group (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela)
  • Caribbean (The Bahamas, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago)
  • Central America, Haiti, Mexico, Panama, and the Dominican Republic

Additionally, the Industries and Cross-Cutting Themes Department manages business and client engagement from an industry perspective. It is composed of six divisions: three focused on core industries (Infrastructure and Energy (IEN), Financial Institutions (FLI), and Corporates (SMC)); two focused on cross-cutting themes (Climate and Environment (CLE) and Gender and Social Inclusion (GSI)); and one dedicated to Portfolio Management (PTM). Together, these divisions support the implementation of IDB Invest’s mandate by providing sectoral expertise, thematic leadership, and strategic portfolio oversight across the institution.

About this position

The Financial Institutions Division (FLI), part of the Industries and Cross-Cutting Themes Department, work with financial institutions that share our commitment to sustainable development and financial inclusion. FLI supports the development of climate resilience portfolios, financing to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) portfolios, financial inclusion, digitalization, social housing, investment in health and education infrastructure, and trade expansion.

The Andean Group Division (CAN), part of the Regions Department, is responsible for managing business and client engagement from a country perspective within its member countries. It also provides oversight to the Country Representatives of the IDB’s Vice Presidency for Countries and to the Directors of Delivery Units at IDB Invest.

The Delivery Units are responsible for: (i) establishing and maintaining client relationships, (ii) building pipeline through upstream project and sector development, (iii) transaction execution through the incorporation of multiple financial products including loans, guarantees, debt capital markets, equity and quasi-equity instruments, as well as resource mobilization and technical cooperation and (iv) acting as the center of institutional knowledge and expertise for the sectors covered by the Delivery Unit.

You will report to the Director of the Delivery Unit that has a dual-reporting structure to both the Managing Director of the Financial Institutions Division and the Andean Group Division.  

 

What you’ll do

  • You will maintain responsibility for origination and customer relationships in the assigned country and lead the structuring, negotiation, approval and closing of financial institutions projects in the sectors covered by the Financial Institution Sector. Under the coordination of the Delivery Unit Director, you will lead the outreach and be asked to assist in the origination and structuring efforts of financial institutions projects in Colombia and/or other countries in the Andean region. 
  • Business Development & Client Acquisition: i) Identify and target new business opportunities by proactively researching potential clients in need of support from IDB Invest, ii) Lead the preparation and delivery of client pitches, offering tailored financial solutions to meet their specific business needs, iii) Leverage existing networks to bring in new clients while maintaining and growing relationships with existing clients.
  • Deal Origination and Execution:  i) Lead the identification and evaluation of potential lending, investment, or advisory opportunities, ii) Lead the due diligence process, conducting thorough research and analysis to assess the feasibility and risks associated with transactions, iii) Contribute to the preparation and review of transaction documents, ensuring accuracy and compliance with IDB Invest standards. For Lead Investment Officers only: Develop innovative and appropriate financial structures for complex transactions, maximizing potential for co-financing and mobilizing additional sources of capital.
  • Upstream and Project Preparation: i) Lead efforts for the identification of projects that need further development before they become bankable ii) mobilize and lead the internal teams of IDB Invest to provide advisory services and other upstream efforts to prepare projects for financing including risk assessment and identification, capital structure and funding strategy, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies (including market analysis, financial modeling and analysis, environmental and social, etc.)
  • Team Leadership and Development: i) Manage cross-functional teams (bankers, analysts, legal advisors) through all stages of transaction execution, ensuring efficient coordination and communication. ii) For Lead Investment Officers only, mentor and train junior staff by providing hands-on guidance to junior team members on financial modeling, deal structuring, and client management, ensuring they develop core investment banking skills. iii) For Lead Investment Officers only, conduct regular reviews of team members’ performance, offering feedback and development plans aligned with both personal and organizational goals.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork: i) Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams across IDB Invest particularly on environmental, social and corporate governance safeguards, development effectiveness, legal, advisory, risk, and integrity functions to ensure the seamless execution of transactions, ii) Foster a team-oriented environment by actively contributing ideas, sharing expertise, and providing mentorship to junior team members iii) Collaborate with IDB experts to offer the best solutions to clients and in order to catalyze financing for the growing demand for financial institutions, iv) For Lead Investment Officers, support the Portfolio Management Division as needed on supervising the portfolio of Financial Institutions projects. 
  • IDB Group Synergies: I) Collaborate with both the public and private sectors to offer the best solutions to clients, ii) For Lead Investment Officers only,  interact with IDB teams in the region to contribute to Governments and Authorities, ensuring that the applicable regulatory frameworks and national/regional financial institutions investment plans enable the structuring of financially viable and bankable financial institutions projects.

What you'll need

Education:  Master’s degree (or equivalent advanced degree) in Finance, Business Administration, Engineering, International Development and/or other relevant fields. CPA Certification would be considered a plus

Experience:  You have at least 6+ years of relevant professional experience for a Lead Investment Officer position and at least 5+ years for a Senior Investment Officer, with experience in loan, equity origination, structuring complex transactions with a validated track-record of working with a broad range of financial instruments and products (including equity and mezzanine). Confirmed experience in a similar role in a commercial or development bank or advisory firm, expertise and experience in the Financial Institutions sector (i.e. Private Banking) would be mandatory. Strong client relationship experience and skills are also highly valued.

Languages: Proficiency in Spanish and English, spoken and written, is required.

  • Citizenship: You are either a citizen of Colombia or with residency or legal permit to work in Colombia.  
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab. 

Type of contract and duration

National staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
