This will allow IDB Invest to significantly scale up its investments, to approximately $19 billion, and unlocking greater private sector participation to drive development and climate impact across the region.
About this position
We are looking for a Director of Development Impact – Real Sector Operations working under the supervision of the Managing Director of the Development Effectiveness Office (DVF).
DVF oversees the design and implementation of the IDB Invest’s development effectiveness framework. It establishes, implements, and coordinates compliance with evaluation standards at each stage of a project’ s life cycle (origination, preparation, implementation, and evaluation). DVF ensures both accountability and learning for the benefit of our clients, partners, and beneficiaries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Furthermore, it develops operational recommendations grounded in impact evaluations and data analytics, knowledge production, and cooperation with other MDBs on development effectiveness. Finally, DVF ensure timely and transparent reporting on development impact to IDB Invest’s internal and external stakeholders.
To fulfill its mandate, DVF is responsible for managing and reviewing a comprehensive suite of development effectiveness tools, including the IDB Invest Impact Rating System (DELTA), the Annual Supervision Report (ASR), Expanded Supervision Reports (XSRs), sector‑specific impact models, in‑depth ex‑post and impact evaluations, as well as technical assistance and training on impact management.
DVF is led by a Managing Director and three Development Impact Directors, respectively responsible for Impact Intelligence, Financial Sector Operations, and Real Sector Operations, each managing team dedicated to these functions. The Director of Real Sector Operations will be responsible for supporting all industries of IDB Invest Corporate and Infrastructure segments.
What you’ll do
- Oversee the application of development effectiveness standards across the full lifecycle of IDB Invest’s real sector operations, ensuring relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, evaluability, and sustainability. This includes DVF’s work on:

- supporting upstream work to identify and facilitate operations aligned with country and institutional priorities;
- participating in the structuring of operations to compute impact ratings and ensure a clear theory of change and robust development metrics;
- monitoring progress and results over time, identifying lessons learned and corrective actions to maximize portfolio impact.
- Coordinate closely DVF’s real sector operational work with Delivery Unit Heads, Portfolio Management Directors, Industry Heads, and Regional Lead Officers to ensure alignment and operational coherence. Support DVF’s team coordination with all other teams involved in operational work.
- Advise project teams on the design, monitoring, and evaluation of complex and first-of-a-kind operations and support the deployment of innovative financial products.
- Oversee the delivery of training to teams and clients on theory of change, indicators, data collection, and evaluation methodologies.
- Collaborate with the Director of Development Impact Intelligence to ensure the development of Impact Models to standardize operational approaches and advance digitalization and process improvements that enhance efficiency and client experience in real sector operations.
- Collaborate with the Director of Development Impact Intelligence to ensure the timely and high-quality production of evaluations and knowledge products relevant to real sector operations.
- Jointly with other DVF Directors, oversee the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of IDB Invest’s impact management tools and practices across the project cycle, as well as support DVF Managing Directory in setting DVF strategic priorities and work plans.
- Manage a dedicated DVF team of staff and consultants supporting real sector operations, setting priorities and allocating resources to ensure effective and efficient delivery, while developing talent, clarifying roles, and providing regular feedback.
- Participate in and support senior leadership engagement in Management and Board operational committees, contributing technical and strategic input.
- Coordinate closely with peers and senior leaders across IDB Invest and the IDB Group to foster collaboration, synergies, and institutional alignment.
What you'll need
Education: Master’s degree (or equivalent advanced degree) in economics, business administration, finance, public policy, or other fields relevant to the responsibilities of the role. PhD considered a plus.
Experience: At least 10 years of relevant professional experience in impact management and development effectiveness of real sector operations.
- Extensive, hands-on understanding of IDB Invest operations, or comparable experience in a multilateral institution, development finance institution, and/or the private sector.
- Advanced experience in monitoring and evaluating the impact performance of operations; strong knowledge of impact evaluation methods is a plus.
- Advanced expertise in IDB Invest’s Corporate and Infrastructure segments (e.g., manufacturing, agribusiness, tourism, digital economy, energy, and infrastructure; see https://idbinvest.org/en/sectors for reference).
- Advanced project management skills, including experience managing complex projects, developing and implementing innovations, and engaging stakeholders across multiple levels of the organization.
- Extensive team management experience, with strong capacity to coach and guide junior team members.
- Strong knowledge of corporate and structured finance is a plus.
- Deep knowledge of and/or experience in Latin America and the Caribbean is essential.
Languages: Proficiency in English. Additional knowledge of Spanish, French, or Portuguese is desirable.

Type of contract and duration
- National staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
