About this position

We are looking for a strategic, creative, and adaptable Communications Consultant. As a Communications Consultant, you will provide targeted communications support to help strengthen the strategic positioning and visibility of the IDB as a trusted partner for sustainable development. You will support the Country Office Management Team and relevant business units in selected external communication priorities related to institutional priorities, regional programs, partnerships, operations, and knowledge products, while engaging effectively with diverse IDB stakeholders.

You will work in the Suriname Country Office, part of the Caribbean Country Department within the Vice Presidency for Countries and Regional Integration (VPC). This team is responsible for supporting the IDB Group’s development agenda in the Caribbean, advancing regional integration, strengthening country engagement, and promoting sustainable development through partnerships, operations, knowledge products, and strategic communications initiatives. In close collaboration with VPC, the Regional Department, and the Communications Division, the team works to enhance the visibility and impact of the IDB Group’s work across the region.

What you’ll do

  • Provide strategic communications advice and support to the Country Representative and management team, ensuring alignment with IDB Group communications policies, guidelines, and approval processes.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor the annual communications work plan in line with Country Office, Regional Department, VPC, and institutional priorities.
  • Design and execute visibility initiatives that communicate the development impact of IDB operations, partnerships, and knowledge products.
  • Support priority public and private events by ensuring compliance with institutional messaging, protocols, brand standards, and visual identity guidelines.
  • Maintain and strengthen relationships with key media contacts and stakeholders, including government, private sector, civil society, donors, academia, and influencers.
  • Coordinate approved media outreach activities, including press briefings, interviews, and media placements, following established corporate workflows and clearance processes.
  • Draft and coordinate the clearance of press releases, media responses, talking points, and other communications materials.
  • Monitor media coverage and public conversations to identify and report reputational risks and communication opportunities.
  • Develop, adapt, and edit communications products such as presentations, stories, newsletters, web content, event briefs, and other priority materials, ensuring compliance with IDB standards.
  • Generate and coordinate engaging social media content through approved workflows, ensuring consistency with institutional messaging, quality standards, and brand guidelines.

 

 

 

What you'll need

•    Education: A Master's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, International Relations or other fields relevant to the responsibilities of the role.

•    Experience: At least 5 years of progressive experience in strategic communications, development communications, or public relations. 

•    Languages: Proficiency in English  spoken and written is required. Additional knowledge of Dutch is preferable.   

Requirements

•    Citizenship: You are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries.  Must be eligible to work in Suriname without the need for sponsorship.

•    Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab. 

Type of contract and duration

National consultant Part -Time, 12 months (up to 48 months, subject to eligibility).
