About this position

We are looking for an Economist with excellent verbal and written communication skills to serve as the Country Economist for Venezuela. As Country Economist, you should have strong teamwork skills, expertise in macro/micro analysis, econometric applications, and a clear understanding of public policy.

You will work as part of the Economics Team for the Andean Region, within the Country Department of the Andean Group. This team promotes and develops the Bank’s strategies and programming in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. The Country Department of the Andean Group (CAN): (1) supports the development, negotiation, and management of projects and programs; (2) maintains relationships with governments and civil society; (3) assists with routine project implementation; and (4) monitors procurement activities related to projects. The Department also oversees macroeconomic monitoring, produces economic and sectoral studies, and organizes knowledge-strengthening workshops.

What you’ll do

Working independently with limited supervision, you will:
•Lead economic, social, and political surveillance in Venezuela, in close coordination with Sector Specialists and the Economics Team of the Andean Countries Department (CAN), focusing on interpreting macroeconomic and financial trends.
•Prepare high-quality country briefs, risk assessments, and outlook reports (written and data visualization), applying appropriate methodologies and datasets. Conduct debt sustainability analyses.
•Contribute to applied economic research using solid theoretical and/or empirical tools to generate relevant policy evidence for Venezuela and other Andean countries, contributing to IDB’s operational work.
•Provide technical input to project teams by analyzing and interpreting complex, diverse information.
•Identify research topics for the Bank’s Country Strategy, the Economics Team’s knowledge agenda, and for designing and implementing the Bank’s program in Venezuela. Identify key areas for policy dialogue with the country.
•Coordinate the evaluation, preparation, and monitoring of progress and results of the Country Strategy.
•Participate in economic policy dialogue and broader development discussions with policymakers in Venezuela, influencing the policy debate with advanced knowledge of sectoral and/or economic issues.
•Build networks with international organizations, academic institutions, government officials, and professional bodies to exchange information, promote research initiatives, and expand the IDB’s influence.
•Foster and nurture strategic partnerships with other IDB Group areas and external counterparts to advance a wide range of multisectoral products and applied knowledge activities.
•Support dissemination of analytical work, promote joint research initiatives, and participate in policy discussions inside and outside the Bank.
•Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating on technical cooperation and knowledge products.
•Represent the Country Representative and/or Regional Economic Advisor (REA) at meetings as needed and assist with ad hoc requests from the Country Representative or REA.
•Mentor, coach, and guide junior staff to develop technical expertise.

What you'll need

-Education: Master’s degree in Economics, International Development, Public Policy, or related fields. A PhD is preferred. 
-Experience: Between 10 and 15 years of progressive experience in economic research, macroeconomic monitoring, and analysis of economic information. Proven knowledge of standard techniques for debt analysis, balance of payments, current account analysis, and debt sustainability. Experience with policy issues and development challenges in the region is essential. Experience working with or at the IDB, including familiarity with its policies and procedures, as well as proficiency in econometric software (STATA, MATLAB, etc.) is a plus.
-Languages: 
-Proficiency in English and one of the other Bank official languages (Spanish, French or Portuguese) is required.

Consultant:
-International consultant: International consultant Full-Time, 12 months (up to 36 months).
