About this position
We are seeking a highly motivated Climate Risk management Consultant. As a Climate Risk Consultant you will contribute to the implementation of IDB Invest’s climate strategy by supporting climate analytics, project-level technical work, institutional process improvements, and climate mainstreaming across operations.
You will work in the Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance Division (ESG) of IDB Invest.The position will support both mitigation and adaptation agendas, with a particular focus on high-risk and high-impact operations, greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting, climate data systems, and institutional capacity building. The role is highly cross-cutting and will involve close collaboration with the climate advisory team, investment teams, ESG specialists, and data and digital teams.
What you’ll do
Project Support on High-Risk Climate Operations: Provide technical support to project teams working on high-risk or complex climate projects, particularly related to decarbonization, energy transition, and resource efficiency, as well as climate adaptation and resilience. Review technical documentation, climate action plans, and mitigation/adaptation measures associated with investment proposals and supervision activities.Support development and monitoring of climate-related action plans and performance indicators.
Climate Metrics and GHG Accounting: Support implementation and operationalization of project-level and portfolio-level GHG accounting, consistent with the GHG Protocol, Paris Alignment methodologies, and MDB practices. Support internal GHG data collection, quality control, analysis, and reporting, and contribute to improvements in climate metrics integration within institutional systems and tools.
Climate Process Improvements and Digitalization: Support analysis and improvement of internal climate-related workflows, data systems, and reporting processes. Contribute to exploration and integration of AI-enabled and digital solutions to improve efficiency in climate risk screening, data management, and knowledge generation.
Climate Mainstreaming, Knowledge Products, and Capacity Building: Support development of guidance notes, tools, templates, case studies, and training materials related to climate mitigation, adaptation, and climate risk management. Support delivery of internal training sessions and workshops to strengthen climate integration across investment teams. Contribute to institutional knowledge platforms and learning initiatives.
Institutional Policy and Action Plan Support: Provide technical and analytical inputs to climate policies, action plans, and strategic initiatives at IDB Invest. Support coordination and drafting of internal guidance and policy documentation aligned with MDB commitments and international frameworks. Support cross-departmental coordination related to climate governance and reporting.
What you'll need
- Education: Master’s degree in climate science, environmental science, engineering, economics, sustainability, public policy, or related fields.
- Experience: At least 5 years of demonstrated experience in at least one of the following: GHG accounting and climate metrics, decarbonization and energy transition, climate adaptation and resilience, climate risk assessment and management.
- Languages: Proficiency in English, spoken and written, is required. Additional knowledge of Spanish is preferable.
Requirements
Citizenship: Must be eligible to work in job locations without the need for sponsorship.
Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.
Type of contract and duration
National consultant Full-Time, 36 months (up to 48 months, subject to eligibility).
