About this position

We are looking for a Lead or Senior Investment Officer for the Agribusiness Sector (food, beverages and agribusiness value chain, sustainable forestry, nature-based solutions and carbon credits linked to agribusiness) within the Corporates Division (SMC) of the Industries and Cross Cutting Themes Department (ICT) of IDB Invest. You will report to the Head of Southern Cone within SMC in accordance with the needs of the Division.

Our Corporates Division is organized in four regions: Central America and Mexico, Caribbean, Andean and Southern Cone, with coverage across the 26 regional operating countries where IDB Invest does business in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as sectoral coverage including Tourism, Manufacturing, Agribusiness, and Digital Economy.

What you’ll do

You will be integrated into the team that manages client relationships and structures new food, beverages and agribusiness value chain, sustainable forestry, nature-based solutions and carbon credits linked to agribusiness transactions in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Your scope of activities shall include, but not be limited to:

  • Lead and coordinate business development efforts for the agribusiness sector in Brazil, proactively identifying potential investment opportunities based on IDB Invest’s impact goals, industry experience, reputation, market potential, financial capability, and strategic fit.
  • Lead the structuring, negotiation, and processing of transactions, from mandate to disbursement.
  • Structure bankable transactions considering clients' needs and IDB Invest impact priorities, and prepare and present investment proposals for equity, quasi-equity, and debt (senior loans, trade finance, structured finance, and guarantees) transactions. Provide and lead financial analysis, market and industry assessments, and make recommendations on selected transactions.
  • For Lead Investment Officers only, develop innovative and appropriate financial structures for complex transactions, maximizing potential for co-financing and mobilizing additional sources of capital.
  • Build and manage relationships with agribusiness clients in Brazil.
  • Conduct market assessments and continuously evaluate opportunities and threats to IDB Invest’s agribusiness goals in Brazil.
  • Negotiate legal agreements for financial closing and complete the disbursement process for approved lending and investment transactions, verifying all contractual conditions prior to disbursement.
  • For Lead Investment Officer only, provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring to more junior team members on financial modeling, deal structuring, and client management, ensuring they develop core investment banking skills.
  • Build strong links and networks with internal development partners (environmental, social, and governance safeguards, finance, development effectiveness, legal, and credit risk) and external partners, including corporates, financial institutions, financial sponsors, institutional investors, regulators, global and regional private businesses, multilateral partners, and government officials.
  • Contribute to industry and market research to guide business origination and execution efforts aligned with IDB Invest's investment strategy and mandate for the private sector.
  • Represent and promote IDB Invest by developing key relationships with industry experts, potential clients, partners, and stakeholders.
  • For Lead Investment Officers only, interact with IDB teams in the country to contribute to the design and implementation of viable public/private initiatives and synergies that can lead to tangible business opportunities with the private agribusiness and forestry sector.

What you'll need

•    Education: Master’s degree (or equivalent advanced degree) in finance, business administration, economics or Accounting.

•    Experience:You have at least 5 years for the Senior position and 6 years for the Lead position of relevant professional experience in loan and investments origination, structuring structured finance (project finance), or corporate finance transactions. Confirmed experience in the food, beverage, and agribusiness industry in an investment, advisory firm, or development bank is essential. Experience in sustainable forestry, nature-based solutions, and carbon credits linked to agribusiness will be a plus as well as proven and established relationships in the Brazilian market.

•    Languages: You are proficient in oral and written English and Portuguese; knowledge of Spanish is a plus.

Requirements

•    Citizenship: You are either a citizen of Brazil or with residency or legal permit to work in Brazil.

•    Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.
 
 

Type of contract and duration

National staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
