As part of the Risk Management Department (RSM), the Special Assets Division (SAT) is responsible for efficiently managing non-performing and under-performing assets of IDB Invest’s complex portfolio of private sector loans, guarantees and equity operations. Functions include restructuring, workouts and recovery of non-performing and under-performing assets.
About this position
We seek a dynamic and experienced professional to join as Special Assets Managing Director.
The Managing Director for Special Assets leads the strategic direction, operations, and performance of the Special Assets Division (SAT). This role is responsible for maximizing the recovery of non-performing and underperforming assets by overseeing portfolio strategies, guiding complex negotiations, and ensuring risk mitigation.
This position will report directly to the Chief Risk Officer and is a key member of the risk leadership team. The Managing Director of SAT collaborates regularly with the CEO, the Senior Management Team, and leaders of Credit, ESG, Legal, and Investment functions, ensuring end-to-end alignment on special assets matters.
What you’ll do
- Strategic Leadership: Define and implement recovery strategies and division objectives aligned with institutional goals.
- Portfolio Oversight: Supervise and negotiate complex cases of distressed loans and guarantees, ensuring effective resolution and asset recovery plans. Recommend impairment and provisions
- Team Management: Lead, mentor, and support Special Assets Officers, fostering a high-performing and knowledge-sharing team environment.
- Internal and External Coordination: Facilitate coordination with Credit Risk, ESG, senior management, and governance bodies; represent the division in strategic discussions.
- Risk and Policy Management: Ensure divisional compliance with risk frameworks and internal policies; proactively address portfolio risks.
- Performance and Reporting: Monitor KPIs, ensure transparent reporting, and promote continuous process improvements.
- Knowledge and Tools: Support development of management tools and promote dissemination of lessons learned from asset resolutions.
What you'll need
- Education: Master’s degree (or equivalent advanced degree) in Economics, Finance, Business Administration, Law, Engineering, or another relevant field.
- Experience: At least 15 years of relevant experience with a proven business track record. Expert in non-performing and underperforming assets, overseeing portfolio strategies, undertaking complex negotiations, and ensuring risk mitigation and recoveries.
- Languages: Proficiency in English and one of the other Bank’s official languages (Spanish, French, or Portuguese) is required.

- Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.
Type of contract and duration
- Staff: International staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
