About this position

IDB Lab is looking for a dynamic and client-oriented individual in climate and/or biodiversity finance to support the development and supervision of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF) portfolio within IDB Lab, including both operational and knowledge activities. This will include developing operations in line with both GEF and GCF programming directives and IDB Lab priorities, including promoting innovative approaches to climate change, forestry, land degradation, biodiversity, and inclusive cities.

The Venture Capital Investments Division (LAB/VCI) at IDB Lab is the division responsible for originating and managing the portfolio of reimbursable operations (equity and debt).  VCI has a systemic role of filling key funding gaps, bridging key connections in different fields (e.g. public and private) and mobilizing key ecosystem resources, climate related funding as an example, to support specific ventures with outstanding socioeconomic or environmental impact potential. IDB Lab adds relevant value to those ventures during their business consolidation and expansion and fosters their impact towards solving some of the most pressing development and inclusion challenges of different sectors in LAC (Fintech, Edtech, Healthtech, Agtech/Biotech, etc.).

What you’ll do

  • Support the origination of deal flow that could become potential equity or loan operations, mainly, by engaging and developing relationships with public and private institutions that support entrepreneurs in Mexico and Guatemala.
  • Assess equity and loans opportunities, including coordinating and participating in the screening and due diligence processes; perform financial modeling, credit analysis, market analysis, among others; and prepare investments pitches and memorandums. 
  • Provide support to Investment Officers in the supervision of GEF and GCF projects in Mexico and Guatemala.
  • Provide support to Investment Officers in the supervision of the “Low-Emission Climate-Resilient Agriculture Risk Sharing Facility for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises”, funded by the GCF and IDB Lab, and operations financed by the facility.
  • Coordinate and liaise with the Bank's GCF teams on project pipeline, design, approval and implementation.
  • Prepare annual and multi-year budgets, disbursement projections and Annual Performance Reports (APRs) for the “Low-Emission Climate-Resilient Agriculture Risk Sharing Facility for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises” and operations financed by the facility.
  • Participate in the review, and approval of funds' capital call disbursements on behalf of GCF resources.
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities for management of the “Low-Emission Climate-Resilient Agriculture Risk Sharing Facility for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises” at the field level.

What you'll need

•    Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent advanced degree in areas related to Finance, Business, or a related field.

•    Experience:

  • At least two years of relevant experience in investment and loan origination with a proven track-record working with both equity and debt, with a clear focus on climate and/or biodiversity finance.
  • Work experience in top-tier startups, venture capital and private equity funds, or M&A, with LAC exposure, is a strong plus.
  • Experience in the evaluation of projects sponsored by GEF, GCF or/and other similar entities is a plus.

•    Languages:Proficiency in Spanish and English, spoken and written, is required. Additional knowledge of French and Portuguese is preferable.

Requirements

  • Citizenship: You must be a citizen of one of the IDB's 48 member countries and have no family members currently working at the IDB Group.
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.

Type of contract and duration

  • Type of contract: National Consultant Full-Time.
  • Length of contract :12 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement for up to a cumulative maximum of 36 months.
  • Work Location: On site.
