About this position

We are seeking a highly motivated professional with demonstrated expertise in environmental and social risk assessment and management to join a team that provides technical support to ensure IDB Invest-financed operations are environmentally and socially sustainable. The role involves aligning projects with IDB Invest’s Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy (ESSP), and requires experience on social issues such as resettlement, Indigenous Peoples, contextual risk analysis, and stakeholder engagement, grievance mechanisms, labor and working conditions. Experience with extractive sector and critical minerals would be a plus.

You will work in the Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance Division (SEG), which is responsible for ensuring that IDB Invest financed projects and other activities are environmentally and socially sustainable. SEG specialists provide IDB Invest and its clients with guidance on environmental and social issues and participate in project teams and deliver technical input on social and environmental aspects during project due diligence and supervision.

What you’ll do

  • Support project origination, execution, and monitoring.
  • Conduct environmental and social risk assessments and due diligence for investment proposals.
  • Develop and implement mitigation strategies for adverse environmental and social impacts.
  • Ensure client understanding and capacity to meet environmental and social requirements.
  • Collaborate across teams to mobilize technical and financial resources for sustainability.
  • Provide ESG-related capacity building and knowledge sharing.
  • Offer technical expertise throughout project design and implementation.
  • Oversee project compliance with environmental and social standards.
  • Facilitate stakeholder consultations

What you'll need

Education: Master’s degree in engineering, environmental management, law, environmental sciences, anthropology or relevant field.  

Experience: Minimum of four/five years of relevant professional experience in Latin America and the Caribbean, focused on environmental and social impact assessments, implementation of management plans, cumulative impact analysis, and environmental monitoring of development projects. Proven track record in conducting due diligence, negotiation, and supervision of environmental and social aspects. Experience applying the IFC Performance Standards is highly desirable, along with expertise in resettlement processes, Indigenous Peoples, contextual risk analysis, stakeholder engagement, grievance mechanisms, labor and working conditions.

Languages: Proficiency in Spanish and English, spoken and written, is required for the position.  Knowledge of Portuguese is a plus.

Requirements

  • Citizenship: You are either a citizen of Panama, Mexico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile or legal permit to work in the respective country in which you are to be assigned.
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.

Type of contract and duration

•    Staff: National staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
