Job Description
Sanctions Committee Legal Specialist
City:  Washington DC
Company:  IDB
Posting End Date:  04/04/2025

We improve lives

The IDB Group is a community of diverse, versatile, and passionate people who come together on a journey to improve lives in Latin America and the Caribbean. Our people find purpose and do what they love in an inclusive, collaborative, agile, and rewarding environment.

About this position

The Executive Secretariat of the Sanctions Committee is currently seeking an experienced lawyer with a strong background in litigation — preferably international litigation — to provide legal support to the Executive Secretary of the Sanctions Committee.

The team’s mission: The Sanctions Committee is part of our anti-corruption framework, which addresses allegations of prohibited practices in activities financed or executed by the IDB Group. The Committee is responsible for the appellate review of these cases, and its Secretariat supports the decision-making process from both legal and logistical standpoints.

What you’ll do

Working with limited oversight from the Executive Secretary, you will:

  • Support the Executive Secretary and contribute to the administration of the Executive Secretariat.

  • Draft jurisdictional decisions in both English and Spanish. The ability to draft jurisdictional decisions in French and/or Portuguese would be an asset.

  • Review case evidence in detail, in both English and Spanish.

  • Assess the need for or recommend requesting clarifications or additional evidence from the parties involved in the proceedings.

  • Advise the Executive Secretary in discussions with other units regarding the sanctions regime and related policies.

  • Oversee, organize, and maintain case files, ensuring all case-related records are managed according to established protocols.

  • Examine and synthesize case law from various sanctioning bodies, structuring findings into research papers of publishable quality.

  • Mentor, train, and guide junior colleagues to enhance their technical expertise.

  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Executive Secretary, as needed.

What you'll need

Education: You hold a Master’s degree in law (such as an LLM, JD, PhD, SJD, JSD, or LLD).

Professional Qualification: You are qualified to practice law in at least one jurisdiction. Qualification in both civil and common law jurisdictions is an advantage.

Experience: You have at least four (4) years of relevant experience handling complex civil, administrative, or criminal litigation matters. You possess expert-level knowledge of legal proceedings, preferably in international settings. You have a strong understanding of the theoretical foundations of international dispute settlement or international civil procedure, as demonstrated by your academic record and publications. Experience in international tribunals is considered an advantage.

Skills: You have strong legal drafting skills in both Spanish and English, at a level required for sophisticated legal proceedings without editorial assistance. You are able to conduct detailed reviews of evidence and draft documents under tight deadlines.

Languages: You have full command of English and Spanish. Additional professional proficiency in French and/or Portuguese would be an advantage.

Requirements

•    Citizenship: You are a citizen of one of our 48 member countries. We may offer assistance with relocation and visa applications for you and your eligible dependents.

•    Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity or second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.

Type of contract and duration

•    Staff: International staff contract for an initial period of 36 months, renewable upon mutual agreement.

What we offer

  • A competitive compensation package, including an annual base salary expressed on a net-of-tax basis.
  • Leaves and vacations: 24 days of paid time off, 8 personal days, sick leave, and gender-neutral parental leave.
  • Health insurance: The IDB Group provides employees and eligible dependents with a comprehensive medical benefits program covering medical, dental, vision, preventive care, and prescription drugs.
  • Pension plan: A defined benefit pension plan that provides financial security and supports employees in planning for their future.
  • Relocation and visa assistance: We offer support with relocation and visa applications for you and your family, when applicable.
  • Hybrid and flexible work schedules.
  • Health and well-being: Access to our Health Services Center, which provides preventive care and health education for employees.
