About this position

We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated professional with expertise in environmental and social risk assessment and management to join a group that provides technical support, direction, and leadership in ensuring that IDB Invest’s financed operations are environmentally and socially sustainable and align with its Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy (ESSP).

You will work in the Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance Division (SEG), which is responsible for ensuring that IDB Invest financed projects and other activities are environmentally and socially sustainable. SEG specialists provide IDB Invest and its clients with guidance on environmental and social issues and participate in project teams and deliver technical input on social and environmental aspects during project due diligence and supervision.

What you’ll do

  • Support the origination, execution, and monitoring of projects.
  • Provide environmental and social risk assessments of IDB Invest’s transactions, identifying sensitive areas and issues to be addressed.
  • Provide and implement solutions to avoid, minimize, and mitigate adverse environmental and social risks and impacts.
  • Conduct and participate in environmental and social due diligence processes of new investment proposals for IDB Invest’s consideration.
  • Ensure that IDB Invest’s clients: i) understand the applicable environmental and social policies, guidelines, and project-specific requirements, and ii) have the necessary dedication and capacity to manage social and environmental impacts and risks adequately.
  • Work with clients and other relevant units of the IDB Invest to mobilize technical and financial support to improve the environmental and social sustainability of the operations.
  • Provide internal and external clients with capacity building on ESG-related topics by crafting and piloting information sharing schemes.

What you'll need

  • Education: Master’s degree in engineering, environmental management, law, environmental sciences, or relevant field.
  • Experience: At least six years minimum of relevant experience in the Latin America and the Caribbean region (preferable in Brazil, Paraguay, or Argentina) related to impact assessments, execution of environmental and social management plans, cumulative impact assessment, environmental monitoring of development projects, as well as due diligence, negotiation, management, and supervision of environmental and social aspects. Experience applying the IFC Performance Standards is preferable.
  • Languages: Proficiency in Portuguese, Spanish and English, spoken and written, is required for the position.  Knowledge of French is a plus.

Requirements

  • Citizenship: You are either a citizen of Brazil or have residency or legal permit to work in Brazil.
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.

Type of contract and duration

National staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
