About this position

The Environmental and Social Solutions Division (VPS/ESG) of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is responsible for ensuring that IDB financed projects and other activities are environmentally and socially sustainable and comply with the Bank’s environmental and social policies. Specialists in (VPS/ESG) provide the Bank and its borrowers with guidance on environmental and social safeguard issues and participate in project teams, providing technical input on social and environmental issues during project preparation/due-diligence and supervision.

ESG is seeking for an experienced Communication, Knowledge and Capacity Building Specialist who will be responsible for developing and implementing a new collaborative and communicational culture to stimulate the continuous production of knowledge from ESG’s operational specialists in a manner that connect ESG best practices to communication-ready products and different audiences. The ideal candidate will be responsible for delivering key insights that provide rigor and structure to communication products, capacity building efforts, services, and platforms as vehicles to engage internal teams and IDB’s clients, sectors, and key stakeholders.

The Communication, Knowledge and Capacity Building Specialist will integrate the Capacity Building and Communications Group’s team that oversees the implementation of the IDB’s Environmental and Social Performance Framework, procedures and guidance, and curates and disseminates knowledge from the full spectrum of ESG activities to further the learning, development and application of good practices and lessons to ESG, IDB staff, clients, and stakeholders at large.

What you’ll do

  • Support the planning, delivery, and logistics of ESG capacity-building events, engaging closely with country offices to align event objectives with local priorities.
  • Support the development and design of communication materials, presentations, ESG internal and external newsletters, diffusion of blogs and online courses, and provide quality review of ESG templates for communication led by ESG specialists.
  • Facilitate debriefing sessions after capacity-building events with country offices and internal teams to assess effectiveness and capture lessons learned.
  • Support the implementation of the Communication Strategy approved in 2023 while improving internal communications and collaboration within ESG.
  • Collect and analyze participant and stakeholder feedback from capacity building events to identify areas for improvement in logistics, content, and material quality.
  • Work closely with the Capacity Building and Communications Group to ensure clear messaging and targeted dissemination of ESG events, results, and publications through social media, IDB’s website, and other channels.
  • Engage with Group Heads, ESG Champions, and specialists in planning capacity-building initiatives, ensuring strategic alignment with ESG priorities.
  • Review the portfolio of ESG knowledge, learning, and communication products, ensuring alignment with the new Communication Strategy.
  • Contribute to the formulation of inputs for the evolving capacity-building strategy, leveraging data from past events and engagement with stakeholders to refine approaches and enhance effectiveness.
  • Support the production and promotion of ESG publications, technical notes, and academic papers, collaborating with KIC, EXR, and ESG Hubs to enhance ESG visibility within the Bank.
  • Support post-event activities, including follow-up communications, answering participant questions, and compiling key outcomes to evaluate impact.
  • Coach and build leader and manager communications capabilities, strengthening key ESG messages within the operational team.
  • Support the definition of indicators to measure capacity-building activity outcomes and recommend improvements based on results.
  • Assist in the creation of high-impact ESG events by reviewing talking points, briefing notes, and one-pagers for the Unit Chief and other senior leaders in preparation for key engagements.

What you'll need

-Education: Master’s degree, graduate program or advanced studies in Communications, International Development, International Affairs, Journalism, Public Relations/ Administration, or other fields relevant to the responsibilities of the role.

-Experience: At least 5 years of progressive experience in international development, communications, event preparation, institutional capacity building, debriefing and evaluation, marketing, web writing, editing and/or related fields. Knowledge of SharePoint, Mailchimp and Teams is highly desired.

-Languages: Proficiency in English and one of the other Bank official languages (Spanish, French or Portuguese) is required.

    -    International consultant: International consultant Full-Time, 12 months (up to 36 months).
