About this position
We are looking for an analytical, technically proficient and communicative data engineer consultant to join the Regional and Sectoral Data Group within our Research Department.
The Regional and Sectoral Data Group (RSD) coordinates and supports the efficient management and governance of regional and sectoral data generated or obtained through research, knowledge, and operational work that is not produced in the Bank’s systems nor owned by the Bank but falls under the responsibility and/or custody of the IDB. This includes both traditional (censuses, surveys, administrative records) and non-traditional (social networks, digital footprints, satellite imagery, etc.) data sources extensively used across various departments, including VPS, VPC, and SPD.
The Regional and Sectoral Data (RSD) Team seeks to optimize data pipelines and implement scalable data solutions. A data engineer consultant must design, develop, and maintain data architectures, ensuring seamless integration between various data sources and analytics platforms. The data engineer will work under the direction of the Data Architect.
What you’ll do
- Design and implement data pipelines to support analytics, reporting, and business intelligence initiatives
- Optimize data ingestion, transformation, and storage processes for high performance
- Enhance data quality, integrity, and security standards across workflows
- Streamline and scale ETL/ELT processes to support growing data volumes and complexity
- Collaborate closely with data architects, scientists, analysts, and IT teams to ensure a reliable data infrastructure
- Support both real-time and batch data processing requirements as appropriate
- Implement automated data validation, quality checks, and anomaly detection
- Establish and maintain metadata management and data cataloging systems
- Develop monitoring dashboards for pipeline performance and failure alerts
- Create and maintain documentation for data workflows, architecture diagrams, and engineering best practices
What you'll need
• Education: Bachellor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field. Master's degree is preferable.
• Experience: 2 years of experience in data engineering. More than 5 years of experience are desirable.
• Languages: Fluent in English and Spanish; additional knowledge of Portuguese and/or French is a plus.
Skills
- Expertise in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
- Proficiency in SQL, Python, Spark, and ETL tools
- Experience with data virtualization platforms like Denodo, as well as traditional data integration and ETL solutions
- Experience with data governance frameworks
- Strong understanding of data modeling and warehousing
- Ability to document processes effectively
Requirements
• Citizenship: You are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries. We may offer assistance with relocation and visa applications for you and your eligible dependents.

Type of contract and duration
• International consultant Full-Time, 12 months with the possibility of extension up to 36 months
