About this position
We are looking for two experienced finance and accounting professionals: a Lead Officer and a Senior Officer in IDB Invest’s financial instrument accounting function.
In this role, you will supervise an accounting team in collaboration with various other corporate units to contribute to initiatives to scale operations in alignment with IDB Invest’s Impact+ mandate.
You will work in the Controllership Division within the Finance and Administration Department and report to the Principal Accounting Officer. The Accounting team is responsible for the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements for IDB Invest and its donor funds, ensuring compliance with accounting policies and procedures in accordance with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP) or other relevant basis of accounting. In this role, you will perform various operational accounting activities related to development-related investments, treasury portfolio and corporate accounting areas.
What you’ll do
As Senior officer, your responsibilities are as follows:
- Perform various operational accounting activities including consolidating multiple legal entities, special purpose vehicles (SPVs), Trusts and/or Donor funded programs.
- Conduct monthly and quarterly closing processes, ensuring timely and accurate reporting. This includes managing consolidation entries and intercompany eliminations.
- Manage the consolidation accounting function, including but not limited to designing reporting templates or packages, building systems and related processes, setting up operational procedures & internal controls, and identifying suitable external vendor arrangements.
- Pay a key role in the operations of financial instrument accounting, involved in a broad group of products such as loans, debt instruments, equity investments, guarantees and derivatives, and develop analytical reviews and control procedures to mitigate risks and support audit readiness.
- Foster strong working relationships with colleagues and other departments to drive efficient and practical operational solutions.
- Coordinate with internal & external auditors to support financial statement reviews and audits.
As Lead Officer, your responsibilities are as follows:
- Represent Accounting team in cross-functional strategic initiatives and new products.
- Lead the accounting implementation of major Corporate-wide system projects.
- Supervise financial instruments accounting, covering loans, debt instruments, equity investments, guarantees, derivatives such as swaps, forwards & options, and structured products.
- Drive continuous development and enhancement of accounting procedures and related internal controls, including challenging current practices to align with market benchmarks and promoting process improvement opportunities in a practical and efficient way.
- Oversee the knowledge management practice within the team including developing technical accounting guidance, cross-training topics and documentation maintenance.
- Manage, mentor and develop a team of accounting professionals based in headquarters and in the Region. Foster a culture of excellence, accountability and continuous improvements.
- Build and maintain collaborative working relationships with Risk Management, IT and other Finance stakeholders at all levels (e.g, front, middle and back office functions). Influence and resolve differences across organizational boundaries where required.
- Keep abreast of changes in accounting standards, industry best practices and regulatory changes that impact unit’s operations, and engage with relevant peer institutions or market counterparts for latest trends and knowledge exchanges.
What you'll need
Education: Master’s degree (or equivalent advanced degree) in Accounting, Finance, Information Systems or other fields relevant to the responsibilities of the role. Professional certification such as CPA or CFA is required.
Experience: A minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible experience for the Lead Officer level. At least 5 years of relevant experience for the Senior Officer level. Experience in Big Four accounting firms or large financial institutions is preferred.
Technical and leadership capabilities:
- Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of complex accounting topics such as Consolidations and Derivatives. Experience in implementing large Financial Systems with practical applications of accounting standards is highly sought after.
- Communication: Excellent analytical, problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Ability to influence and build consensus across multiple stakeholders.
- Project Management: Strong project-management discipline with proven record of delivering multi-phased large scale projects.
- Leadership (for Lead Officer level): Demonstrated experience in managing teams in a multicultural environment. Strong people management and coaching skills.
Languages: Proficiency in English required. Additional knowledge of Spanish, French or Portuguese is a plus.

Type of contract and duration
International staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
