About this position

We are seeking an exceptional Director to help lead the Blended Finance Division at a moment of significant growth, innovation and institutional ambition. Reporting to the Managing Director of Blended Finance, the Director will be the Managing Director’s trusted partner and operational deputy, with shared responsibility for the Division’s performance, culture, risk management, and external reputation. 

 

The Director will be solutions-oriented for our clients (internal and external), and help nurture a culture of positive accountability. The successful candidate will help teams navigate the Blended Finance work program with optimism, resilience and pragmatism, as well as bring credibility with enterprise leadership within IDB Invest. The role will translate strategic priorities into clear work programs, mobilize multidisciplinary teams, remove execution bottlenecks, and ensure consistent quality across transactions, donor programs, governance, portfolio management, knowledge, and resource mobilization. This is a leadership role for someone who can bring clear understanding of the role/function of blended finance within IDB Invest, and has a desire both shape the future of blended finance and help run the business required to realize it. 

What you’ll do

1. Serve as a Trusted Partner and Strategic Deputy

  • Partner closely with the Managing Director to set priorities, translate strategy into action, and drive achievement of the Division's objectives, KPIs, and growth ambitions.
  • Provide candid, timely, and solutions-oriented advice; proactively identify risks and opportunities, challenge assumptions constructively, and support sound decision-making.
  • Act on behalf of the Managing Director within delegated authority, exercising strong judgment on what can be decided independently and what requires escalation.
  • Maintain the highest standards of integrity, discretion, reliability, and accountability in managing sensitive institutional, personnel, donor, and transactional matters. 

2. Lead Performance, Operations, and Execution Excellence

  • In partnership with the Managing Director, oversee the Division's integrated work program, ensuring effective delivery across fundraising, blended finance transactions, donor programs, technical cooperation, portfolio management, reporting, governance, knowledge, and fundraising.
  • Maintain clear operating rhythms, performance expectations, management information, and accountability mechanisms to ensure delivery against targets and KPIs.
  • Align staffing, budget, systems, and resources with strategic priorities, while anticipating future business needs and organizational growth.
  • Drive continuous improvement, innovation, quality assurance, and problem-solving across the Division's activities, products, processes, and platforms.

3. Drive Communication, Influence, and Institutional Leadership

  • Communicate clearly, proactively, and consistently across teams, management, and stakeholders to create alignment, transparency, and informed decision-making.
  • Build strong partnerships across IDB Invest and the IDB Group, effectively navigating organizational processes, policies, governance requirements, and institutional dynamics.
  • Bring a strong understanding of Board priorities, senior management expectations, and decision-making processes to help advance Division initiatives effectively.
  • Represent the Division with credibility and influence in engagements with senior management, donors, clients, partners, and external stakeholders. 

4. Build a High-Performing Team and Deliver Impact

  • Lead, develop, and inspire a diverse multidisciplinary team, fostering accountability, collaboration, inclusion, trust, and professional growth.
  • Create a culture of positive accountability, setting ambitious goals while providing the support, coaching, and clarity needed to achieve them.

  • Cultivate strategic relationships with donors, development partners, and other stakeholders to strengthen resource mobilization, thought leadership, and the impact of the blended finance platform.

What you'll need

Education

Master's degree (or equivalent advanced degree) in finance, economics, business administration, public policy, international development, engineering, or another fields relevant to the responsibilities of the role.

Experience

  • At least 10 years of progressive relevant experience, preferably 12 years of experience, in blended finance, either as a practitioner of structured finance, impact investment, development finance, infrastructure finance, venture equity, or because you have deep understanding of development finance, climate finance, concessional finance, donor relations or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience developing teams and mentoring staff, building high-performing teams, allocating resources, and leading cross-organizational change or improvement initiatives. 
  • Strong understanding and experience leading teams that structuring innovative transactions, including impact investments and/or blended finance investments for climate-related investments, investments that promote social inclusion and job creation, and investments that leverage private capital for impact.
  • Understanding of how Development Finance Institutions' (DFI) blended finance principles and practices, including additionality, market discipline, donor governance, fiduciary requirements, and development impact, specifically translate into investment structures.
  • Experience managing quality and material financial, fiduciary, operational, legal, compliance, or reputational risks. Proven ability to advise and negotiate with senior management, clients, donors, regulators, investors, and other external partners. 
  • Experience in Latin America and the Caribbean or other emerging markets is highly desirable. Experience in a multilateral development bank, development finance institution, impact investor, or international financial institution is a strong asset. 

Languages

•    Languages: Proficiency in English, spoken and written, is required. Proficiency in Spanish is highly desirable. Additional knowledge of Portuguese or French is an asset.

  • Institutional leader: Possesses a strong understanding of IDB Invest and/or IDB Group governance, policies, decision-making processes, and organizational dynamics. Leverages this knowledge to navigate complexity, build alignment, anticipate challenges, and accelerate the effective execution of strategic priorities.
  • Adaptable leader: remains composed amid ambiguity, absorbs new mandates, and balances pace, consultation, and risk awareness.

Requirements

•    Citizenship: No requirements

•    Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.

Type of contract and duration

•   Staff: International staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
