About this position

We are looking for for an attorney for the position of consultant in the Financial Intermediaries in the Financial Markets and Products Legal Division (FML) of the Legal Department, focusing on Capital Markets, Structured Finance, Supply Chain Finance (funded and unfunded), Corporate Finance, and/or venture capital.

Our Legal Department advises Management, the Board of Executive Directors, and the Board of Governors on all legal matters relating to IDB Invest. As part of its functions, the Legal Department provides a full range of legal support for non-sovereign-guaranteed operations throughout the entire transaction cycle, including origination, portfolio management, workouts, and the development of new products. Also, we provide legal advice on all institutional and financial matters for IDB Invest, including governance, financial management, institutional integrity, and administration of human resources. 

What you’ll do

Your main functions and responsibilities shall include the following, which involve different levels of expertise and complexity depending on your seniority. 

 

  • The delivery of legal services in FLM in connection with private sector and non-sovereign guaranteed transactions with financial intermediaries and financial markets. Oversee lending and guarantee transactions and technical assistance operations, including due diligence, structuring, negotiating, drafting, closing, portfolio administration, workouts, and restructurings of these transactions. Certain specialized products in financial markets and corporate transactions will be outside of the scope of responsibility and will be managed by a different team within FML.
  • Work with a highly skilled, interdisciplinary, and multi-cultural group of attorneys in the delivery of legal services, setting work expectations and goals, and providing timely, consistent legal advice to client areas.
  • Provide legal support with regard to a wide range of legal, policy, procedures, administrative, and institutional matters related to private sector and non-sovereign guaranteed transactions.   
  • Work in the formulation and updating of model documentation and other initiatives with a view to enhancing the delivery of legal services on transactions. 
  • Share knowledge within and outside the Legal Department, including through the organization of training sessions, on a variety of subjects to support operational activities and foster the application of best practices. 
  • Work to develop innovative, high-quality, and effective legal solutions that meet business needs in a timely manner.    
  • Represent the Legal Department in management committees, meetings of the Board of Executive Directors, and institutional initiatives. 
  • Keep abreast of legal trends and precedents across IDB Invest member countries, and make recommendations for standardized approaches and updated strategies. 
  • Establish personal networks within IDB Invest and with external legal counsel and experts. Access and leverage relationships with external resources when appropriate. 
  • Work collaboratively with other attorneys from multilateral development institutions to address broad legal issues affecting all parties. 

What you'll need

Education: Master Law degree (Juris Doctor, LL.M., or equivalent) from an accredited law school in an IDBG member country, and admission to practice law in at least one jurisdiction in an IDBG member country. 

Experience: At least 5 years of progressive experience in legal  as an attorney. Your experience should include at least one of the following areas of expertise: Capital Markets, Structured Finance, Supply Chain Finance (funded and unfunded), Corporate Finance, private equity, venture capital and funds. In addition, experience in the following areas is a pluss: experience in top-tier private firms (US/UK/LAC) or Development Financial Institution (DFIs),specifically in autonomously drafting, negotiating, and managing the full lifecycle of complex, cross-border structured finance, portfolio restructurings, and capital markets transactions across multiple Latin American and Caribbean jurisdictions 

Language: proficiency in English and one of the other Bank official languages (Spanish,  French or Portuguese) is required  

Requirements

•    Citizenship:  No requirements for HQ. National consultants Must be eligible to work in job locations without the need for sponsorship. 

•    Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab. 
 

Type of contract and duration

 

 National or International Consultant (Full-Time), 19 months (up to 48 months, subject to eligibility).
