This will enable IDB Invest to nearly double its annual regional investments from approximately $8 billion to $19 billion.

About this position

The Credit Risk Management (MCR) Division, part of the Risk Management Department of IDB Invest, is searching for a highly-qualified and proven Director who will lead the Division’s activities in infrastructure and energy, including the coordination of a team of credit risk officers whose role is to support the origination, execution and management of high quality and creditworthy projects that result in significant development impact. The Director will also be the voting risk member in the assigned Delivery Units as further outlined below. The selected Director will report to the Managing Director of the MCR Division.

 

The MCR Division, is responsible for developing and overseeing credit risk policies, parameters and procedures; articulating best practices and credit risk training, reviewing credit and investment proposals with a view to assessing risk and supporting the internal credit approval process; participating in the project portfolio supervision process to validate risk rating assessments; and strengthening the Institution’s capacity to identify and manage the credit risk present in its lending operations and treasury activities (including investments and financial derivatives portfolios). This Division covers Infrastructure, Corporates, Financial Intermediaries and Funds; and Equity.

 

The MCR Division works closely with investment officers and clients to identify opportunities to proactively add value, beyond compliance and risk mitigation, and contribute to long-term developmental impact and sustainability of transactions.

 

Business delivery is conducted through Delivery Units that are responsible for: (i) establishing and maintaining client relationships, (ii) building pipeline through upstream project and sector development, (iii) transaction execution through the incorporation of multiple financial products including loans, guarantees, debt capital markets, equity and quasi-equity instruments, as well as resource mobilization and technical cooperation and (iv) acting as the center of institutional knowledge and expertise for the sectors covered. This integrated model enables Delivery Units to align business development with strategic priorities, enhance regional coordination, and ensure operational effectiveness across IDB Invest.

What you’ll do

  • Coordinate the Division’s activities in infrastructure and energy, including the coordination of a team of credit risk officers whose role is to support the origination, execution and monitoring of high quality and creditworthy projects that result in significant development impact
  • Serve as RSM voting member of the assigned Delivery Units and support the investment teams in the completion of transactions.
  • Lead credit risk training and lessons learned for the infrastructure and energy sectors.
  • Lead/perform the independent credit risk assessment of complex infrastructure and energy corporate or project finance transactions, including reviewing and providing advice on financing structures, consultant reports, financial models, and legal documentation in order to fully assess resulting credit risk and possible mitigants to assigned or supervised transactions.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams in the analysis of prospective transactions and make recommendations to mitigate the identified key credit risks, as part of the approval process.
  • Supervise/review and ratify the internal credit risk ratings applicable to transactions, considering all dimensions involved, including borrower risks, transaction structure risks, and the macro/regulatory environment, as well as the estimated probability of default, loss-given default, and expected recoveries.
  • Review/prepare well written credit risk assessments including credit recommendations on the counterparty's risk profile/rating in accordance with IDB Invest credit policy and guidelines and documentation standards.
  • Formulate well-reasoned recommendations and persuasively communicate recommendations at required committees,  and to senior management.
  • Review and advise in the processing of all material waivers and amendments.
  • Work closely with the IDB Invest’s Special Assets Division on troubled debt restructurings to identify suitable debt restructuring strategies, steer jointly with that Division and other stakeholders in the IDB Invest the recovery efforts and proposed loan provisions.
  • Use analytical tools, risk management models and methodologies to measure IDB Invest credit risk exposure for assigned projects and ensure that all transactions operate inside of clearly established limits.
  • Collaborate in the design and administration of training programs on credit issues and topics.
  • Contribute to IDB Invest strategies and evaluations.
  • Participate in relevant internal and external meetings with internal and external clients.
  • Oversee preparation and dissemination of good practices and generated knowledge, further ensuring that clients are provided with capacity-building on credit risk management related topics.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring and support to other team members. 

What you'll need

  • Education: You hold a master's degree or an advanced degree in finance, business administration, engineering, or other fields relevant to the responsibilities of the role.  
  • Experience: At least 10 years of relevant professional experience, preferrably 15 years of relevant professional experience, in a credit risk-related function or similar role at a peer institution, financial services provider, or professional services firms. 
  • Language Skills: Proficiency in English is required.

Requirements

  • Citizenship:
    • For National Staff: You are either a citizen of any of our Country Offices’ locations or a non-citizen eligible to obtain residence or authorization to work in the country in which you are to be assigned without the need for sponsorship by IDB Invest.
    • For International Staff: There are no citizenship requirements.
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.

Type of contract and duration

  • Washington DC (USA): International staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
  • National staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
